National e-Governance Services Directory

CDAC is also designing and developing the National Services Directory (NSD) along with National e-Governance Service Delivery Gateway (NSDG). This is the first of its kind in any gateway strategy adopted across world. Department of Information Technology, Government of India envisages to establish a constellation of gateways in order to meet the future need of increase in service delivery channels built across not just one but multiple such gateways operating at State level or as domain gateway specific to Mission Mode Projects undertaken at various levels. NSD serves as central registry for Gateway address resolution to facilitate inter Gateway communication.

Apart from a NSD, each gateway will have a local Gateway Services Directory (GSD). This will be the registry for services that are registered with the gateway. If the gateway receives a request for a service, it will be first resolved with GSD, which will be local to the gateway. If the service is not resolved from the GSD, it means that the service is not registered with the Gateway and in that case gateway will send the service resolution request to the National Services Directory. NSD will return the information about the other gateway where that service is registered, so that the gateway will redirect the service request to the other gateway.

Inter-gateway messaging will be in accordance with a specification called IGIS. NSD will play major role in the inter-gateway communication in the gateway constellation, as it is the central directory for all the e-governance services. This inter-gateway communication to happen, IGIS, mandates that, all gateways and services should be enrolled with the gateway.

So, NSD will provide interfaces for:

  • Enrollment and de-enrollment of gateways
  • Enrollment and de-enrollment of services and
  • Updation of services.
